Andrea Kimi Antonelli sealed the 2026 title in Mexico City, but Ferrari's first-lap infighting, Haas's mid-weekend driver change and Bottas's high-speed failure made it a turbulent weekend before Mercedes' constructors' shot in Brazil.
Sergio Pérez's new Cadillac contract leads a busy week that also brought fresh criticism of Ferrari's Austin strategy and a candid verdict on Red Bull from Max Verstappen before Mexico City.
Valtteri Bottas' ninth retirement of the season, and his frank admission that Cadillac cannot always explain its failures, show why the newcomers remain Formula 1's only pointless team with five rounds left.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli starts the United States Grand Prix from pole with a 102-point lead, while Ferrari's qualifying slump, Red Bull's resurgence and COTA's bumpy surface dominate the Austin build-up.
Cadillac team boss Marcin Budkowski has declined to guarantee Valtteri Bottas a seat next year, a pointed signal from a squad still without a point after 17 rounds of its debut season.
Christian Horner's admission that he courted George Russell revives an old Red Bull-Mercedes feud, as Toto Wolff weighs his succession and a draft of the 2028 rules restores full-length races.
Marina Bay has a habit of exposing whatever is fraying at the edges of a Formula 1 season, and this week it's doing exactly that.
